Removal first mentality has to change

There have been plenty of recommendations with regards to the child welfare system in BC but very few have filtered into communities.
Patricia Dawn of the Red Willow Society says the Cowichan Valley Ministry of Children and Family Development office has been cited as having one of the highest rates of child removal in the province.
Dawn says social workers are up against the wall having to follow the policies they’ve been given but the system sets up everyone involved to work against each other.
She says it doesn’t have to be that way….
The Red Willow Society will be hosting a Cowichan Community Gathering event to give families the opportunity to share their stories and find out about the complaint process.

It goes Friday beginning at 9 at the Cowichan Tribes Gym on River Road.
British Columbia is the last province still utilizing the removal first model when it comes to the welfare of children.
