Passenger rail service back on track

The Island Corridor Foundation (ICF) says Southern Rail and VIA Rail have a tentative deal to get passenger trains rolling on the island.

ICF Executive Director Graham Bruce says it’s a big step but there’s a lot of work to do.

Bruce says the $20 million dollars promised by the regional, provincial and federal governments to repair the E&N Line will be enough to do the basics, and they’ll eventually need to secure more funding.

Nanaimo will be the base of operations for the passenger trains, allowing for an early morning commuter trip to Victoria. The schedule still has to be fine-tuned.
