The switch is on for Island Safeway locations

It’s been an interesting year for Safeway employees on Vancouver Island.

It started when grocery giant Sobeys purchased Safeway Canada last July, 2013 for $5.3-billion.

However, in order for the deal to close Sobeys had to meet certain Competition Board requirements.

In February, Sobeys turned around and sold their Vancouver Island Safeway locations to the Overwaitea Food Group.

Island Safeway locations are now starting the transition to Save-on-Foods.

Ladysmith began their transition on Wednesday, while the Duncan location will begin their switch on Aprill 22.

Kim Novak speaks for UFCW, the union representing the employees. She says they have been in constant contact with their workers and are confident the transitions will be smooth.

Novak says the union is viewing the move as a positive one for employees.
