Measles case reported in Nanimo area

A single case of measles has been discovered on Vancouver Island.

Island Health’s Medical health Officer for Central Vancouver Island, Dr. Paul Hasselback said this case “occurred in someone who attends an education setting,”

Island Health is “conducting an investigation into the measles case and are implementing control measures.”

Public Health staff is contacting exposed families to offer vaccine in order to reduce the chance of the infection developing and other actions to prevent spread.

A measles outbreak has been declared in Ontario. That has prompted Ontario’s chief medical officer of health to issue a travel warning.

In the Fraser Valley over three hundred cases have been confirmed.

Prior to this confirmed case, the most recent case of measles on Vancouver Island was in January, 2010.
