RCMP net armed robbery suspect in the waters of Lake Cowichan

RCMP in Youbou was able to net an armed robbery suspect after he tried to flee by jumping into Lake Cowichan.

On Saturday, April 5, a young man wearing a hoodie with a mask over his face entered the Shop and Save in Youbou.  Armed with a chisel, he demanded the female store owner hand over the cash from the register. He then pushed her out of the way and grabbed the drawer from the register and fled.

The store owner’s husband gave chase, the suspect tried to hide, but when he was discovered he dove into the water and tried to swim to a nearby log boom.

His great escape didn’t work, RCMP were able to arrest him a short time later.

20-yearold, Travis Katzel, from Duncan, is in custody charged with Robbery, Disguise with intent to commit an indictable offense and Mischief Under $5000.

Police are also recommending a charge of Assault and Fail to comply with a condition of an undertaking.

Katzel appeared in Duncan court on Monday, and was remanded into custody.
