Former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty dead at 64

Former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty is dead.

Emergency crews were called to his home in downtown Ottawa Thursday.

The 64-year-old was found without vital signs.

Upon hearing the news of Faherty’s passing, the House of Commons suspended business for the day.

They were on different side of the fence, but even so, Nanaimo-Cowichan NDP MP Jean Crowder had a deep respect for Flaherty.

Flaherty stepped down on March 18th, saying his health was not a factor in his decision, and that he planned on taking a position in the private sector.

Flaherty, a lawyer by training, was first elected in 2006, and served as finance minister nearly his entire time as an MP.

His family is thanking Canadians for their support in his public life.

A cause of death has not been released.
