Alleged bus driver attacker in court

A man, alleged to have attacked a Cowichan Valley bus driver is facing charges related to assault.

Timothy Thorpe will enter his plea today in Duncan Provincial Court.

Jennie Blaney, the spokesperson for the union representing Cowichan Valley Regional Transit workers says attacks on transit drivers seem to be on the rise.

The union and BC Transit are working with their national counterparts to push forward a federal bill that would see harsher penalties for assaults against transit employees.

Behind the support of Liberal MP Ralph Goodale, Blaney says they are gaining traction on the amendment to the criminal code, but cannot put a time frame on when changes could be discussed again.
