Hundreds rally to support Shawningan

More than 800 people showed up for a rally on the lawn of the legislature this morning.

They were there to voice theirĀ opposition to a permit granted to South Island Aggregates by the Ministry of Environment allowing the company to truck in and dump contaminated soil near Sahwningan Lake.

The Shawnigan Residents Association (SRA) organized a large rally. The group is one of many opposing a permit.

Even political lines were blurred on the lawn Thursday, as representatives from the Green and Liberal Parties stood alongside NDP’ers likeĀ Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley and Leader Adrian Dix.

SRAĀ vice president Anne Marie Thornton said It’s more than a “not in my back yard” issue as she pointed out the show of support.

Despite strong opposition from the Shawnigan Community the Ministry of EnvironmentĀ granted the permit to South Island Aggregates last August.

The Environmental Appeal Board is holding public hearings into the matter. Those hearings are set to wrap-up April 4, 2014.
