NDP propose Hydro Affordability Act

The NDP have proposed legislation aimed at protecting low-income families from hydro rate increases.

The NDP say the Hydro Affordability Act would give the British Columbia Utilities Commission the authority to require B.C. Hydro to offer a discounted lifeline rate in order to maintain the affordability of energy for eligible low-income British Columbians.

To qualify for that rate, families or individuals would have to demonstrate their need based on household income and the number of people living in the household.

The B.C. Liberals recently announced that hydro rates will increase by 28 per cent over the next five years.
