Bears are looking for food – make sure they don’t find it on your property

There has been no shortages of bears wandering into neighbourhoods this spring.
Conservation officers are urging residents to ensure their garbage is not accessible to the animals, ensure there are no bird feeders or pet food outside.
Officers can write a 230 ticket if a homeowner has attractants out.
Last Tuesday, officers had to put down a black bear that had been visiting the Town and Country Mobile home Park, south of Ladysmith.
There’s word, that bear, isn’t the only one there.
Two weeks ago a bear was spotted on the deck of a home on Kensington Road just off Herd Road north of Duncan.
Several bears have been spotted in Nanaimo parks and neighbourhoods over the past few weeks as well.
Across Vancouver Island there is an estimated one black bear for every two square kilometres so encounters are not unusual.
