After successful Cowichan pilot, Baby Bed program expands

The baby bed program was first launched on Vancouver Island in 2015 in the Cowichan Valley.
Now Island Health, in cooperation with The Baby Box Company and other community partners, is rolling out the program across the entire Island.
The Baby Bed program offers families a free bed with solid walls, a firm mattress and fitted sheet, allowing infants to sleep safely.

The beds can be used until babies are up to four or five months old or when they begin to roll.

Dr. Richard Stanwick, Chief Medical Health Officer says British Columbia has one of the lowest rates of infant mortality in Canada, at 3 point 7 per 1000 live births.

However, sleep-related factors are the leading cause of death in healthy infants….
To get a free baby bed women have to register with the program, watch an online baby care video to get a certificate and then bring that document to their local health unit.
