Provincial Health Officer, Perry Kendall recently sent letters to every school district superintendent in the province regarding the use of naloxone in high schools.
No decision has been made yet, but discussions are in the works about potentially providing the overdose-prevention drug in all schools.
School District 79 Superintendent, Rod Allen says naloxone kits would be administered on a case-by-case basis.
Allen says there are 20 school and support staff who have been trained to administer naloxone.
Kits are available through Island Health.
Heading north, The Nanaimo Ladysmith School District has stocked its highschools with the overdose reversing drug Naloxone.
Assistant superintendent, Bob Esliger says all the secondary schools in the District have Naloxone kits and staff trained to use them….
Esliger says the move to have the overdose preventing kits in the secondary schools was made in consultation with the Island Health Medical Health officer, Dr. Paul Hasselback.
12 youth, between the ages of 10 and 18, have died as a result of illicit drug use between January and July of this year in B.C.
