Province sets the stage for a referendum

The province is moving to set out the terms for a provincewide referendum on electoral reform, specifically whether or not people want proportional representation.
Attorney General David Eby says in order to formulate the actual referendum question the province will be seeking input from residents …..
If the legislation is passed, voters could submit their ballots by mail and, if the referendum passes, the new system would be enacted before the next provincial election, scheduled for 2021.
At the same time, the province has introduced legislation to amend the Constitution Act to reduce the number of seats required for recognized political party status from four to two, to change the fixed date election to a Saturday in October, and to strengthen the institutional stability of government in the event, for example, of a natural disaster.
