A former engineer says, at the pace, we are going, it will be 200 years before gas-powered vehicles are a thing of the past.
Bob Conibear says hybrids use 80 to 90 percent less fuel than gas-powered vehicles, reduce carbon by about 80 percent and have an engine that charges a battery alleviating the problem of small electric batteries that can leave drivers stranded.
Conibear says the fuel savings alone in a hybrid should make them more popular.
Conibear says people don’t trust the batteries in electric cars.
He says despite electric vehicles being significantly more environmentally-friendly than gas-powered vehicles, only two to three percent of the vehicles on the road are electric.
The problem with hybrids Conibear says is that they’re expensive.
Conibear presented his case to the Municipality of North Cowichan recently.
