If you see an accident scene at Cowichan Secondary School tomorrow morning (Thurs) – it is a mock collision event and is not real.
RCMP, along with ICBC are staging the event as part of National Teen Driver Safety Week.
The event is titled It’s too late to say you’re sorry and will be presented to 350 Grade 12 students.
There will be actors and students playing roles of drivers and passengers involved in a mock collision scenario.
They will be made up to reflect injuries in a high risk driving collision and will be part of the scene where first responders will be on site.
There will be lights and sirens from emergency services vehicles that will be staged nearby.
According to ICBC, drivers are 5 times more likely to crash when using a phone for talking or texting.
Distracted drivers are responsible for about one quarter of all fatal crashes in B.C.
On average 15 per cent of distracted drivers, 16 per cent of impaired drivers, and 24 per cent of speeding drivers involved in crashes resulting in injury or death are young drivers.
