Save the Shawnigan Lake R.C.M.P. Detachment Petition: Going to Victoria

A petition to “Save the Shawnigan Lake R.C.M.P. Detachment” is circulating throughout the community.
Early on in the process, the local, provincial, and federal governments were planning on working in partnership to find a new location for the detachment, and after the C.V.R.D. purchased land in Mill Bay, that was supposed to be the new site.
Cowichan Valley M.L.A., Sonia Furstenau says the provincial government has not only pulled its support but advised an amalgamation with the North Cowichan/Duncan R.C.M.P.

Furstenau says the lack of a police presence and the absence of a detachment near the Malahat doesn’t make sense.

Area A Director, Kerry Davis says the former Solicitor General, Mike Morris told him that it wouldn’t be a problem for the North Cowichan/Duncan detachment to service the Shawnigan Lake area, which simply isn’t true.

Solicitor General Mike Farnworth holds the fate of the Shawnigan Lake R.C.M.P. detachment in his hands and he still needs to be “won-over.”

Davis says Farnworth is still looking at the issue and it would be extremely disappointing if amalgamation becomes a reality.

In November, Furstenau is presenting the signed petitions to the legislature and address this issue at the provincial level.

Here’s a link to the petition:
