Disappointment over new softwood lumber duties

The forestry industry and governments are disappointed over the final determination of duties that will be applied to the majority of Canadian softwood lumber shipments entering the U.S.
Premier John Horgan says it’s a small group of people in the U.S. attempting to drive up lumber prices for their own benefit….
The duties being imposed on our lumber producers is a decrease from earlier rates which BC Lumber Trade Council president Susan Yurkovich says could be an indication of some concessions as a result of the Canadian argument but no one really knows the reason why.
Yurkovich says when our producers have to pay duties it takes cash out of the system that they could have invested in new equipment or technology and it creates uncertainty.
