Small homeless camp set up on private land in North Cowichan

There appears to be a couple of people who are living out of tents on Lewis Street in the Municipality of North Cowichan.
Nelda Richardson, Manager of Building and Compliance says the Municipality knows about the set up…..
Richardson says the homeless people are on private property and so there’s not a lot the municipality can do…..
The person who owns the property does not live here and Richardson says the Municipality hasn’t had any luck trying to contact the owner.
Richardson says, if the Municipality had a nuisance property bylaw that would allow it to clean up the property and bill the owner, it could be an effective tool to deal with the situation.
She says, as it stands, the Municipality has no low barrier housing available and can ask the homeless to move on, but can’t force them to go.
