Little fish have a big role to play

Forage fish are an important source of food for salmon which in turn are an important food source for whales.
Kate Emmings, an Ecosystem Protection Specialist with the Islands Trust Fund says a study has recently been completed around Thetis, Hornby and Denman Islands to try to better understand the spawning areas of forage fish.
She says it may eventually result in trying to protect that habitat by restricting development….
Of 2 hundred and 76 Gulf Island beaches surveyed, one hundred 96 of them were found to support the habitat, or conditions needed to support forage fish spawning.
