Hiker hospitalized after fracturing ankle on Maple Mountain

According to a report, a senior male hiker believed to be around 80 years old fractured his ankle on Maple Mountain on Tuesday afternoon and had to be air lifted via helicopter.

The injured man apparently received medical attention after being delivered to emergency crews waiting in an area near Maple Bay’s former fire hall before making his way to Cowichan District Hospital.

Cowichan Search and Rescue says the man hurt his ankle on rough terrain and that he was with a group of hikers that were prepared for the trip.

They add a chopper was used because of the rough environment and limited access to water.
