As first responders around the globe paused to mark the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York City, a unique memorial to the victims was unveiled in front of Nanaimo Fire Rescue Station 1.
The memorial features a section of steel beam recovered from the World Trade Centre site. Nanaimo is one of just six cities in Canada to receive a piece from Ground Zero.
Nanaimo Fire Rescue Chief Craig Richardson says the memorial is a tribute to all the responders and civilians that perished.
2606 civilians, 343 New York City Firefighters and paramedics, 50 police officers, 15 EMTs and 3 court officers died in the attacks.
