Taxation specialist: Canadian snowbirds may face U.S. taxes

A Canadian and U.S. taxation specialist will be speaking in Duncan next week about tax obligations for Canadian snowbirds heading south for the winter.

MNP’s Gerard Roddis says if you are a Canadian citizen who spends a lot of time in the states and doesn’t have dual citizenship or a green card you may need to pay taxes in the U.S.

He adds snowbirds can face issues with both Canada Revenue, which looks for disclosure of assets held outside of the country, and the IRS looking for the number of days Canadians spend in the states, if they sell property and if they die owning certain U.S. based assets.

The seminar takes place next Thursday at the Silver Bridge Inn, however, an RSVP is needed by Tuesday on the MNP website.
