“Bring Back the Bluebirds” is a homegrown project to bring the endangered Western Bluebird back on Vancouver Island.
The birds largely disappeared in the 90s.Jemma Green of the Garry Oaks Ecosystems Recovery Team is the project’s outreach coordinator. She says the key is community support, mainly through people allowing nesting boxes on their property.

The group is working with around 200 landowners across southern Vancouver Island, including 75 in the Cowichan Valley and now a handful in Nanaimo.
Interested people can get in touch with the group via email at: bluebird@goert.ca to do a habitat assessment on your property.
