WFP shutting down Nanaimo mill. Operations consolidating at Duke Point

Western Forest Products is closing its Nanaimo sawmill.

The mill is on land owned by the Nanaimo Port Authority.

Amy Spencer, WFP’s Director of Communications, says they’re consolidating their operations, by expanding their Duke Point mill and shutting down the Nanaimo mill by the end of this year.

The Saltair mill in Ladysmith is also expected to see an increase in production as a result of the shut down at Nanaimo.

Spencer says the 60-some employees at the Nanaimo mill will be offered jobs at other WFP mills, and severance pay.

She says the decision to expand the Duke Point will make them a more globally competitive, sustainable company, able to offer greater stability for employees.
