Online cannabis sales ramp up in B.C., some pricing criticisms

The Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General says there were 1,000 sales during the first hour of operations for the online cannabis store in B.C. and the website did not crash.

Mike Farnworth says the system is performing as it should, so far.

“It went online at midnight and sales started right away so obviously there’s interest. As with any technology, we’ve seen some high profile systems that have crashed. We want to make sure it’s working, that people have a good experience with it and so far it’s performing as we hoped it would.”

The goals of the province when it comes to the legalization of recreational cannabis were to address health issues and price the product low enough to get organized crime out.

However, there’s been some criticism that the online prices, which range from 4 dollars and 20 cents to 16 dollars for a pre-roll, are too high.

You can add 10 dollars to that cost too, for shipping.

Farnworth says he believes the prices are competitive and, he says, B.C. has the largest selection available.

“What we’ve also learned from other jurisdictions is that people are prepared to pay a premium for knowing that they have a product that they can trust, of quality assurance, of knowing where it was produced, knowing exactly what it is.”
