Nanaimo prepares for court date regarding Tent City extension

Nanaimo City Council has voted to oppose an extension of the deadline to close Tent City.

The lawyer, representing Tent City has asked the Court to extend the deadline for closure and that hearing is set for this Friday.

In the event the Court does side with Tent City, Mayor Bill McKay says the City will have to find ways to make it safer for everyone, whether they are in tents or living, working or running businesses nearby.

He says City Council continues to hear from businesses and residents in the downtown about the disorder and disruption created by the encampment.

On the other hand, McKay says they are also hearing a clear message from social service agencies and the minister responsible for BC Housing that people should be allowed to stay until temporary modular housing is delivered and opened in Nanaimo.

BC Housing announced that it would provide 170 units of temporary modular housing in Nanaimo and it would be ready in late November.
