Nanaimo shooting investigation closed

Officers involved in a fatal shooting event in Nanaimo back in May have been cleared of any wrongdoing.

The Independent Investigations Office says police got a tip from ferry staff that a man driving a stolen car and involved in a violent theft on the mainland was on board and headed to Departure Bay.

Police moved in to intercept the man and separate him from other ferry traffic and shots were fired.

During the event the suspect raised his own gun and then shot himself.

The Independent Investigations Office says it would have been impossible to tell whether or not the suspect intended shoot at the officers as he raised his gun, and that they had to act quickly to protect themselves and the public by opening fire.

The report says the man was suffering from several significant recent life challenges and had a lethal amount of fentanyl in his system.

His identity has not been released.
