The annual poppy campaign is underway and Sunday afternoon, the Royal Canadian Legion branch 53 in Duncan is hosting a poppy flag ceremony.
South Vancouver Island Zone Commander Richard Steele said, “Cadet Corps, which is the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force are gathered, the legion members that are still capable to march form up outside City Hall.”
Outgoing Mayor Phil Kent and Mayor-elect Michelle Staples, along with Alistair MacGregor will be on site.
The time for remembrance is now, as the poppy campaign is underway and the poppy flag ceremony is set for downtown Duncan this afternoon.
The parade will make its way to the flagpole outside City Hall and that parade will include veterans and cadets in the Air Force, Army, and Navy.
South Vancouver Island Zone Commander Richard Steele says you can donate and get a poppy, a special symbol of remembrance.
“Remembrance of all the people who sacrificed greatly in many different ways in the wars that they’ve been involved in and the peacekeeping times,” said Steele. “The finances that do come in go to help seniors, veterans, cadet corps, it goes to widows, it’s just one of the things the Legion has been involved with for years.”
The poppy flag raising is set to begin at 1 pm.
