Parking in Downtown Duncan is Changing

Parking is changing on Duncan Street and in the parking lot at the intersection of Canada Avenue and Ingram Street.

These spots on Duncan Street will have improved signage, as the 18 additional free two-hour parking spots between Trunk and Queens Road will have free two-hour parking, handicapped parking, or paid all-day stencilling in each spot.

Bylaw Enforcement Supervisor Gerry Kerr said the new parking ticket dispensers will be much better than the existing ones.

“The current machines that we have for dispensing parking tickets are obsolete, they only take coins, they’re being replaced with three new units,” said Kerr. “Two of the units are going to be on Duncan Street itself and the other one is going to be in, what we call, the paid all day lot or the parking lot on Canada Avenue.”

Kerr said there are a number of reasons for the parking upgrades.

“Obviously, the increase in tourism, the Cowichan Valley’s growing, we get a lot more people coming downtown and a lot of the people are coming here for shopping or for lunch or, maybe a medical appointment,” said Kerr. “The addition of the extra two-hour parking spots should be of fairly significant benefit to anybody coming to the downtown core.”

The parking lot at the corner of Canada Avenue and Ingram Street will have a new all-day parking machine installed in the next few weeks and it will take credit cards and coins.
