Use power bars safely

As soon as the temperature drops, you may feel the need to crank up the heat and dig out the dusty space heater but there are some precautions you need to know about.

BC Fire Chief, Trevor Pike says it’s important to use the units the right unit in the right way.

“Choose one that’s designed for a bigger space. Choose one that’s CSA or UL approved and don’t plug the device into power bars.”

Power strips are not designed to handle the high current flow needed for a space heater and can overheat or catch fire due to the added energy flow.

It’s the same issue with extension cords.

Speaking from experience, Pike says, it’s not a good idea to use a space heater to dry clothes or towels.

He says that’s a recipe for a fire.
