Ride-hailing legislation introduced

The province has introduced legislation that will allow ride-hailing companies to enter the B.C. market next year.

Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure says the legislation will allow residents to have more options and flexibility in how they get around, but there are checks in place to make sure the ride is a safe one.

ICBC will develop a modern insurance product for ride-hailing for next fall.

Measures will be put in place to make sure people are not left stranded when traveling from one municipality to another and there will be increased enforcement of the rules with stiffer penalties for taxi and ride-hailing companies that choose to work outside the law.

Ride-hailing and taxi drivers will have to maintain a Class 4 passenger licence and undergo mandatory criminal checks. number of cabs throughout B.C. to give people more rides.
