Conservation sting nets fines for three local men

Three Vancouver Island men are facing fines for poaching and buying illegal deer meat.

The trio, aged 74, 58 and 47 were sentenced in a Duncan courtroom this week.

The case involved a sting operation by the Conservation Officer Service that began after a man approached a retired RCMP officer of First Nations descent in the Walmart parking lot in 2014.

The 74-year-old man, who had purchased the poached meat along with a 47-year-old man, each pled guilty to two counts of trafficking in wildlife.

The pair were fined the minimum of around 5,500 dollars.

The 58-year-old man, who was selling the poached meat, was fined 2,500 dollars and sentenced to two years of probation.
