Island Health directed the Town to issue the notice after turbidity levels exceeded a threshold that could result in adverse health effects.

The Town of Lake Cowichan’s water comes from an unprotected body of water and the source of the turbidity cannot be determined.

Town officials say they can’t be certain whether or not harmful pathogens in the water can be treated with chlorination or not.

It’s likely the boil water notice will be in place until early next week.
