Malahat, other Island routes now require winter tires

The cold snap we’re heading into will probably prompt some people to get their snow tires on, and RCMP are reminding the other people about some new rules.

Cpl Michael Elston of Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services says drivers will notice new signs on designated winter routes, like the Malahat or the Highway 4 summit on the way to Port Alberni, telling people they to have winter tires between October 1st and March 31st.

Elston says the tires have to be winter tires, displaying the snowflake or M+S symbol, with a tread depth of at least 3.5 millimeters.

He says a spot check last week on the Highway 4 summit led to 21 notices to drivers about vehicle safety problems, mostly tire-related.
