Animal cruelty is once again in the spotlight following a recent incident near Ladysmith.

Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder says it’s an issue that has also stirred conversation in the national’s capital.

Crowder says there is no time frame yet as to when the two pieces could be up for debate however the picture will become clearer before the end of the year.

She adds the Criminal Code needs to tighten up so there are harsher penalties for people that do commit animal cruelty.

The BC SPCA recently rescued two severely starved terrier-cross puppies that had been left tethered outdoors in freezing temperatures without food or water.

The organization says charges are in the works.
