RCMP hit the road for pedestrian safety campaign

You may have noticed a few more police out and about Thursday.

The Duncan/North Cowichan RCMP were working on their pedestrian safety campaign.

RCMP officers, along with Auxiliary Constables and volunteers were at key intersections, and on James Street outside Cowichan High reminding people it’s a little harder for drivers to see them at this time of year — and handing out reflectors.

They also blitzed Cowichan Bay and the area near Chances Casino on Cowichan Way.

ICBC is also involved in the effort, and they say drivers have to do their part too – by sharing the road and taking extra caution in areas with lots of pedestrians or cyclists.   We’re asking drivers to do their part to share our roads safely and watch out for pedestrians especially when turning in intersections, says Kate Woochuk, local ICBC road safety coordinator. As a pedestrian, you need to make eye contact with drivers and wear reflective clothing or gear to make it easier for drivers to see you in fall and winter.
