Proposed Dakova Square for downtown Duncan faces first hurdle

The brakes on the proposed $11 million Dakova Square project in downtown Duncan have been pumped for now.

Construction of the five-storey residential-commercial building appeared like it would be starting before the end of the year after numerous successful rezoning readings, however, the tune changed at Duncan’s last council meeting.

Incumbent councilor Sharon Jackson says they voted 4-3 in favour of holding off on the final rezoning reading.

She says there is still work to be done before anything is finalized and it will be up to the new council to address it.

Last month, council narrowly voted in favour of rezoning that would allow the building to be five storeys and have more space for sale within the structure.

The building would be located at the corner of Canada Avenue and Government Street and would dramatically alter the look of downtown.
