Area MPs are enjoying the last Christmas break in their ridings. New riding boundaries come into effect at the next election.
Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder and Nanaimo-Alberni James Lunney won’t be running for reelection. Â Vancouver Island North’s John Duncam will run again, but in a new riding created when part of North Island was merged with the Powell River area
But, Political analyst Alan Warnke, a retired Vancouver Island University professor, says even without the long-time incumbents the new ridings will likely be a two way race. He says the region is still a battleground between the Conservatives and NDP. He says the Liberals have a long way to go before they’re in contention.
The new riding boundaries don’t take effect until the next election, which is supposed to be October 2015.
