Area MPs celebrating last Christmas break in ridings before realignments

Area MPs are enjoying the last Christmas break in their ridings. New riding boundaries come into effect at the next election.

Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder and Nanaimo-Alberni James Lunney won’t be running for reelection.  Vancouver Island North’s John Duncam will run again, but in a new riding created when part of North Island was merged with the Powell River area

But, Political analyst Alan Warnke, a retired Vancouver Island University professor, says even without the long-time incumbents the new ridings will likely be a two way race. He says the region is still a battleground between the Conservatives and NDP. He says the Liberals have a long way to go before they’re in contention.

The new riding boundaries don’t take effect until the next election, which is supposed to be October 2015.
