Gas theft hampers rescue effort

Cowichan Search and Rescue says thieves made a rescue Friday afternoon a lot harder than it had to be.

The SAR team was called out around 3 in the afternoon to help rescue a fisherman whose boat sank on the Cowichan River near Skutz Falls.

But as the volunteers were getting ready to head out, they found the fuel tank on one of their trucks was empty. It seems someone broke into the locked compound and siphoned the gas.

The rescuers still got to the scene and the man, was checked over by paramedics and is fine. A second man in the boat was able to swim ashore.
