A prank gone wrong in 2012 has ended with the BC Supreme Court ordering the parents of a Nanaimo teen to pay SD 68 nearly 50 thousand dollars in damages.
The School District sued under the School Act, after the then 14 year-old boy attached a friend’s lock to a sprinkler head at Wellington Secondary. It triggered the whole system, causing extensive damage.
The parents argued they’re not liable, because their son didn’t intend to cause any damage, but in a ruling released today BC Supreme Court judge Shelley Fitzpatrick disagreed.
Fitzpatick acknowledges it was a difficult decision that could lead to financial hardship for the parents, but she also says it would be up to the Legislature to change the law.
