Project aims to improve spawing areas for herring

Cowichan Estuary Restoration and Conservation Association is hoping to give herring better spots to lay eggs.

Association Chair Dr. Goetz Schuerholz says they’ve launched a pilot project to improve spawning areas at the Cowichan Bay Fisherman’s Warf.

Schuerholz  says they wrapped dock pilings with a special material that protects the attached eggs from creosote.

Schuerholz  says they’re looking to do the same thing with pilings at the Mill Bay and Brentwood Ferry terminals soon. They expect herring to start spawning in the next couple of months.
