Ferries critic happy to see issue of emergency sailing holds resolved

The NDP Ferries critic says she’s glad to see BC Ferries acting on promises to change the way it bills the BC Ambulance Service for holding sailings.

It’s something that happens a lot on the Gulf Islands.

When the huge fees became public Ferries said an administrative “misunderstanding” led to accidental overcharges for the Ambulance Service, as well as RCMP and BC Hydro.

It also promised to allow a 9 minute “grace period”.

North Island MLA Claire Trevena says they’ve now doing that, and they’ve paid back the overcharges.

Trevena says there’s still a problem, though. Under a new system calls to hold a sailing have to go through ambulance dispatch, to BC Ferries, then to the terminal. Ambulance crews used to call directly.
