Work begins on new Estuary bridge

Work has started on a big project for the Cowichan Estuary Restoration and Conservation Association.

The group is breaching the man-made dike (also known as the Westcan Causeway) separating the Estuary, and replacing it with a bridge.

It’s a project they hoped to get started last year, but the final permits have only just come through.

Association Chair, Dr. Geotz Schuerholz says it will restore the natural movement of water that’s vital to the health of the Estuary and help restore balance between fresh and salt water in the northern and southern sections.

The project, which has a price tag of more than 110 thousand dollars, is a joint effort with Western Stevedoring.
