CERCA hoping for public’s help gauging success of herring project

A local conservation group is trying to bring herring back to Cowichan Bay, but they need the public’s help to tell if their efforts are working.

The Cowichan Estuary Restoration and Conservation Association has a pilot project underway to make it easier for herring to spawn around the Cowichan Bay Fisherman’s Wharf (pictured above).

Director John Atkinson says bringing the herring back is an important goal.

The Association is hoping people keep an eye out, and let them know if they spot any eggs.

But, Atkinson says he isn’t worried that they haven’t seen any eggs yet even though it’s the height of spawning season.  He says the more important worry is the big picture; herring once thrived in the area and don’t any longer.
