Illegal dumping Facebook page strikes a chord on VI

A new Facebook group is tapping into deep anger over illegal garbage dumping all across the Island.

The page, “Stop Illegal Garbage Dumping – Vancouver Island“, has attracted more than 1200 followers in five days.

It was started by Nanaimo resident Louise Gilfoy after she found a pile of trash near her home.

Now Gilfoy’s spreading the word about the risks associated with illegal dumping, including the potential for identify theft and the heavy toll on the environment.

Gilfoy says photos of garbage dumped in the woods, along riverbanks, and at the bottom of cliffs have been pouring in.

She’s also hoping to connect with groups interested in organizing some cleanups.
