Area First Nations celebrate plan to protect Grace Islet

There was a big celebration at the Tseycum First Nation long house near Victoria to mark the partnership set up to protect and preserve Grace Islet, off Salt Spring Island.

Chiefs, Councillors and elders from Nations including the Cowichan, Stz’uminus and Penelakut took part in the event on Tuesday.

Area First Nations supported the Province and the Nature Conservancy of Canada in buying the Islet from a private owner, after plans for a massive house sparked protests.

Under the partnership, the first order of business is going to be dismantling the partially-built structure.

A remediation and long-term conservation plan is still being finalized.
