Destination BC: Changes to business practices will improve tourism

The head of Destination BC says changes to the way they do business are going to strengthen the tourism sector, even if there’s still some unease about them.

CEO Marsha Walden says local tourism organizations will now have better access to some of the 50 million in provincial funds Destination BC controls for marketing.

In the Cowichan Valley the changes at Destination BC have also meant less money for the Visitor Information Centre, which is run by the Chamber of Commerce.

Destination BC used to provide direct funding, based on visitor numbers.

Local governments are covering the shortfall through grants while they work out a long term arrangement.
