They’re back!

You’ve probably already seen them out and about, but
wildlife experts on the Island say bears are emerging from hibernation and starting to bulk up, so they’re reminding people of the simple steps to avoid conflicts.

Conservation Officer Troy Sterling says they’ve already had a few bear-related calls in the mid-Island area, and it’s time to take care of those attractants.

Garbage is the most common cause of conflicts between people and bears, but things like bird feeders, barbeques that haven’t been cleaned, and pet food left outdoors can also bring a hungry bear to your yard.

Sterling says Conservation Officers are interested in tracking bear sightings, and they’re encouraging people to report activity using their toll free line: 1-877-952-7277
