The BC Nurses Union is coming out against Island Health’s decision to send some day-surgery cases to private clinics.
The Health Authority says having clinics do those surgeries, and procedures like endoscopies, is a cost-effective way to deal with wait lists.
Adrian Gear is one of the Union’s Island co-chairs. She says Island Health could deal with wait lists by making better use of its own facilities.
The Union claims having the surgeries done at private clinics won’t solve the wait list problem, and could even make it worse because the private clinics will end up poaching staff from the public system.
