Furstenau: Stop work order is 1st step to permanently halt toxic soil dump near Shawnigan Lake

Shawnigan Lake’s CVRD area director says a stop work order by the Mines Ministry to halt dumping toxic soil near the lake is a good first step…but more can be done.

Sonia Furstenau says the order for South Island Aggregates only applies to half of the site, and not the quarry, which is impacted by a Ministry of Environment permit.

She says there is a planned rally next week where a petition will be presented to the provincial government.

South Island Aggregates was granted a permit for the soil dump earlier this year, after the Environmental Appeal Board rejected a challenge from residents, the CVRD and others.
